He currently represents U. S. and non-U. S. high net worth individuals, families and companies on a wide range of personal and business tax matters, especially in connection with cross-border income and estate tax planning and compliance in the U. S. He is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the U.S.

Mr. Warshaw received an L.L.M. (Tax) from Georgetown University Law Center. He received a J.D. from St. Louis University School of Law and he received a B.A. cum laude from the University of Rochester.

Non US citizens | Pre-immigration tax strategies

Mr. Warshaw regularly advises non-U. S. clients on structuring inbound pre-immigration tax strategies including basis step-up in legacy assets, avoiding the U. S. CFC and PFIC anti-deferral tax regimes, optimizing use of foreign tax credits, minimizing green card status as well as advising on and drafting of “drop-off trusts.”

Current US citizens | Minimizing US Exit Tax

He also advises long-term green card holders and U. S. citizens on planning to minimize their U. S. exit tax through gift programs, managing equity compensation and by drafting “expatriation” trusts and considerations of a change of domicile outside the U. S.

Current US citizens | Tax Filing Compliance Advice

He has also counseled clients in complying with their U. S. tax filing obligations by engaging accountants and bringing such taxpayers into compliance with their numerous U. S. international tax reporting requirements.

Cryptocurrancy International Taxation Advice

He has also advised on the U. S. international tax aspects of cryptocurrency, including how to become U. S. tax compliant and how to mitigate U. S. tax implications prior to and following renouncing U. S. citizenship.

He is a past partner of McDermott Will & Emery’s highly regarded Private Client Department, having established the Boston office practice in 1997. He also served as a senior wealth advisor in JP Morgan Private Bank’s Boston and Greenwich CT offices. He was also formerly general counsel to a large national brokerage that focused on delivering liquidity planning strategies and he has a strong understanding of the array of onshore and offshore life insurance products. Mr. Warshaw began his legal career in the Office of the General Counsel at the Internal Revenue Service National Office in Washington, D.C. At present, Mr. Warshaw is in sole practice working from his home offices in Wellesley and Stockbridge, Massachusetts. His clients reside throughout the world from India, Singapore, China and Hong Kong to the Caribbean and throughout Europe and in Israel.
